The last time I did this job—concluding a conference—was, curiously enough, in Budapest in The subject then was the revolution of , forty years on. That was clearly a revolution, and everyone recognized it as such: there was a strong element of popular and violent uprising. It was probably the last revolution in that classical sense in European history. By the end of the year, however, the revolution had been suppressed by Soviet military intervention, its leaders had been arrested, and a new Hungarian communist government, loyal to the Soviet Union, had been put in place. Despite its ultimate failure, the Hungarian Revolution nevertheless marked a turning-point in the history of Europe.
